Prop Firm Hedging Strategy: Price the Floor on Your Own Broker

By Pietro Fioraso, CEO, BrokTrading Ltd

A prop firm hedging strategy in most search results is a warning: do not go long on one evaluation and short on another. That warning is correct. It is also not a strategy. It is a ban. The strategy that belongs on this URL is different: you trade the challenge, and you hold the opposite, fee-sized position on your personal broker so the floor is a priced event.

If the prop account hits maximum drawdown, the hedge on your own broker is sized so the challenge fee is designed to come back. In Margin mode that scenario is also where the surplus is designed to land. This is not a refund from the firm, and it is not a guarantee: it depends on configuration, capital, and friction (erosion).

Same verb, five behaviours. If an overview fuses them, the page has failed. The rest of this article is the procedure, the lot, and the ways the procedure breaks.

Five things people call a hedging strategy

BehaviourWhere the other side sitsTypical firm view
Same-account hedgeLong and short EUR/USD on one evaluationUsually allowed on forex MT4/MT5. Net drawdown still counts.
Cross-account, same firmLong on account A, short on account B at one providerBanned. Exploit of the book.
Cross-firm pairLong at firm A, short at firm BBanned in terms. Detection is improving.
EA-mirrored reverse onto a second propA bot copies the opposite onto another evaluationStacks hedging + copy-trading. Banned.
Personal-broker hedge (this page)Opposite lot on your own MT4/MT5, sized to the feeOrdinary broker position. Read the terms anyway.

Same-account hedging is a trading technique. It does not return the fee when you hit the floor. The banned pairs try to make the firm's book pay you for a coin flip. The personal-broker version makes your broker the other side of the cash you already paid the firm. Longer disambiguation: prop firm hedging explained.

The procedure

  1. Buy a CFD evaluation on MT4 or MT5. Note the fee, the max-drawdown percent, and whether the floor is static or trailing. Futures-prop is out of scope.
  2. Open a personal MT4 or MT5 account at a broker you choose. This is the prop firm personal account in the only sense that matters here: the paying leg.
  3. Price the cycle on /start. Pick Scaling or Margin. The screen prints projected broker profit on a breach and the deposit the cycle is designed around.
  4. Fund the personal account to that deposit (or to the phase deposits if you are staging capital). Under-funding is how the strategy dies before the floor.
  5. Run both terminals on one Windows machine. The hedge bot opens the opposite lot locally. No cloud relay.
  6. Trade the evaluation as you already trade. The strategy is not a new entry model. It is the other leg.
  7. Close the cycle at the floor or at payout. At the floor, Scaling is designed so the fee comes back (or a thin surplus); Margin is designed so surplus lands there. At payout, the surplus in Scaling is meant to sit on that cheque; Margin often nets the broker loss against it. Neither ending is a firm refund.

Lot sizing is the strategy

If you reverse 1:1 against a $50,000 notional, you are trading $50,000 on a broker that does not have $50,000. The strategy sizes to the cash fee, not to the sticker notional.

Worked case, same 2-step $50k profile as the homepage: $300 fee, 10% max drawdown, $5,000 virtual loss at the floor.

These are projections from a configured cycle, not a promise. The technical split is Margin vs Scaling. Friction is erosion.

When the strategy fails

  • Wrong target. You pointed the reverse at a second prop account. That is the banned pair, not this strategy.
  • Wrong floor. Trailing vs static vs daily changes when you arrive. Configure the cycle for the contract you bought. Daily vs max, static vs trailing.
  • Wrong capital. Margin sized, Scaling funded, or the reverse. The hedge is a position. Positions need margin.
  • Wrong venue pair. News on one feed, not the other. A broker that rejects the lot. Spread and swap that the projection did not fully eat. That is erosion, not a bug in the idea.
  • Wrong product. A trading bot that also fires entries on the challenge adds a detection surface this strategy does not need. See prop firm trading bot.

None of those failure modes is "the firm should have refunded you." The firm does not refund. The strategy either books on the personal account or it does not.

Risk warning (UK and everywhere else). Prop Firm Armour is hedging software for informational and risk-management purposes. It is not a refund from the firm, not income advice, and not a guarantee. Trading leveraged products can lose some or all of the capital you put on the broker. Configuration, capital, and friction (erosion) decide the cash result. Read the terms of the firm you trade.

See the number on your challenge

Open /start and price the projected broker profit on a breach for your size, fee, and mode. That screen is the claim running as math, not a slogan.
